『ママス＆パパスのリーダーであり、カリフォルニア音楽シーンの偉大なる‘パパ’ジョン・フィリップスの名盤の誉れ高いファースト・ソロ・アルバム。スティール・ギターにバディ・エモンズ、レッド・ローズ、ドブロ・ギターにジェームス・バードン、ドラムスにハル・ブレイン、ピアノにラリー・ネクテル、ヴォーカルにダーレン・ラヴ等参加。ソロ・ヒット曲「ミシシッピー」収録。』付属帯ライナー

『パパ・ジョンのファースト・ソロ[ジョン・フィリップス・アルバム]は、71年の発売。ジョンは自伝で自分のヴォーカルに対してかなり弱気な発言をしていたが、このアルバムを聞いているとそんな発言は謙遜としか思えない。確かに頼りない声だが、そのヴォーカルは友人だったグラム・パーソンズと同様に歌心にあふれたもの。ルー・アドラー制作でバックの布陣も基本的にはママ・パパ時代と同じメンツだが、ここではメロウなカントリー・ポップ・サウンドに仕上がっている。マイケル・ネスミスの通じるレイドバックした音づくり。名手レッド・ローズとバディ・エモンズによるスティールの音色を聞いているだけでも、ウットリとさせられる。駄作のメロディがひとつもなく、ジョンが希代のソングライターであったことを改めて実感させられた次第だ。』

80年代に入りジョン・フィリップスが当時の盟友デニー・ドハーディやスコット・マッケンジー、そしてスパンキー＆アワー・ギャングの女性ヴォーカルのエイレン・マクファーレンと共にママス＆パパスをリユニオンし多くのオールデイズ・サーキットで活躍していた頃のライヴ音源。同時期に米国で活躍したロブ・グリル率いるザ・グラスルーツ(こちらもリユニオン)の音源とカップリングで発売された珍しいスウェーデン盤。グラスルーツ・ファンにも興味深いCDです。

"The first solo album of John Phillips, the leader of the Mamas & The Papas and the great ‘Papa’ of the California music scene. Buddy Emmons on steel guitar, Red Rose, James Burdon on dobro guitar, Hal Blaine on drums, Larry Knechtel on piano, Darlene Love on vocals, etc. Solo hit song “Mississippi” included." Liner attached

"Papa John's first solo [John Phillips Album] was released in 1971. John made some very pessimistic comments about his vocals in his autobiography, but listening to this album, those comments seem nothing but humble. Although his voice is unreliable, it is full of song, just like his friend Gram Parsons. Produced by Lou Adler, the backing line-up is basically the same as in the Mama & Papa era, but here it has a mellow country pop sound. The sound is laid back, like Michael Nesmith's. Just listening to the steel sounds of masters Red Rose and Buddy Emmons is enough to make you entranced. There is not a single bad melody, and it once again made me realize that John was a rare songwriter. 』

② is a live recording from the 1980s when John Phillips reunited the Mamas & the Papas with his friends Denny Dohardy and Scott McKenzie, and Ellen McFarlane, the female vocalist of Spanky & Our Gang, and was active on many all-days circuits. This is a rare Swedish release that was released as a coupling with a recording by The Grassroots (also a reunion) led by Rob Grill, who was active in the US at the same time. This CD will be of interest to Grassroots fans as well.

I am listing this for inventory clearance, but unfortunately I will not be selling them separately. Please purchase as a set of two. It has been carefully stored and the record surface is clean, but it has been in storage for a long time, so please refrain from purchasing if you are sensitive about such things.
