1961年に<悲しき街角=RUNAWAY>でポール・アンカやニール・セダカと並んで60年代を代表する米国のシンガーソングライター(日本では‘街角男’と呼ばれた)の仲間入りをしたミシガン州出身のデル・シャノン。そのデル・シャノンが、60年代に8枚のオリジナル・アルバム(5thはハンク・ウィリアムスのカヴァー・アルバム)を残し、2006年(国内盤は2012年)には1967年録音済みで発売を見送られていた9thアルバム[Home And Away]がめでたくCD化され全9枚の音源が出揃いました。80年代にはトム・ぺティのツアーでのゲスト出演や故・ロイ・オービソンの後任としてトラヴェリング・ウィルベリーズへの参加(予定?)など話題の絶えなかったデル・シャノンですが、やはり60年代に残した多くの明快でキャッチーな自作曲とその独特のファルセット唱法が彼の人気の原点ではないかと思います。上記6枚のCDには60年代にデル・シャノンが書き上げた殆どの楽曲と彼が好んで録音した同時期のカヴァー曲(ビートルズ、ストーンズ、ラヴィーン・スプーンフル等を含む)が網羅されています。

何年か前に、CS放送<Music Air>チャンネルで「Old Time Rock’n’Roll-Legends In Concert」というオールディーズ・スターがLIVE会場で歌う映像を見ました。デル・シャノンは、往年のヒット曲をバンドをバックにエレキ・ギターを弾きながら6曲を歌いますが、これがカッコ良く渋い声もお得意のファルセットも健在で大柄な身体を揺らしながら歌うその姿に魅了されました。調べたところ録画時期は1988年の様でした。そこから1年後にNEWアルバム[ROCK ON!] を録音し、自ら命を絶ってしまったと考えると本当に残念です。合掌

In 1961, with <Sad Street Corner = RUNAWAY>, along with Paul Anka and Neil Sedaka, he joined the ranks of American singer-songwriters representing the 1960s (called 'Machikado Man' in Japan). Dell Shannon. In the 1960s, Del Shannon left eight original albums (the 5th is Hank Williams' cover album), and in 2006 (the domestic version was recorded in 1967), the release was postponed. The 9th album [Home And Away] has been released on CD and all 9 sound sources have been released. In the 1980s, Del Shannon was a hot topic, such as guest appearances on Tom Petty's tour and participation in the Traveling Wilburys (planned?) as a successor to the late Roy Orbison, but he is still 60. I think that the many clear and catchy self-composed songs that he left behind in the 1990s and his unique falsetto singing style are the origins of his popularity. The above 6 CDs cover most of the songs that Del Shannon wrote in the 60's and cover songs that he liked to record during the same period (including Beatles, Stones, Lavigne Spoonful, etc.).

A few years ago, I saw a video of oldies stars singing at a LIVE venue called "Old Time Rock'n'Roll-Legends In Concert" on the CS broadcast <Music Air> channel. Del Shannon sings 6 songs while playing the electric guitar backed by the band's hit songs of the past, but this is a cool and sour voice, and the falsetto that he is good at is alive and singing while swinging his large body. I was enchanted. I looked it up and it looks like it was recorded in 1988. It's really sad to think that one year later, after recording the new album [ROCK ON!], I took my own life. Gassho=合掌
