Drawing on images of contemporary corporate culture and everyday life ― sports team logos, laptop computers, leaf blowers, SUVs ― these battle scenes, military portraits, and propaganda posters examine hot-button issues such as ethnic identity, illegal aliens, and cultural tension with an aesthetic that consciously merges European and Latin American art histories. Published in conjunction with an exhibition at the Laguna Art Museum, the book features commentary on the chronology of the war and foldouts of paintings such as The Great Battle of Los Angeles and Rendezvous at Twin Peaks, and includes an audio CD that tells the stories behind the paintings. “In Smog and Thunder’s central focus may be the conflict between ‘Smog City’ and ‘Fog City,’ but it’s really about a critical previsioning of new California history.” ― San Francisco Bay Guardian
