1960年代の中頃、まだフラワー・ムーブメントやサイケデリックの波が押し寄せる前夜、米国男女コーラスグループとして活躍した[マグワンプス][ディ―プ・シックス]の2枚のCDを出品致します。レンタル落ちではありません。両盤共1～2回のみの試聴です。

『64年結成のマグワンプス。主要メンバーのキャス・エリオット、デニー・ドハティ、ザル・ヤノフスキ―は、このグループの後、それぞれママス＆パパス、ラヴィン・スプーンフルを結成した面々であり、その人気に目をつけて67年に発表されたのが本盤である(64年録音)。フォーク・ロック時代の先駆けとなった彼等のサウンドは、ブルース、R＆B、ロックンロール等をベースとし、まぎれもなくスプーンフルへ継続されていくものであり、②⑨のハーモニカは勿論ジョン・セバスチャンであろう。時おり聞こえるオールド・ポップス的な音は、ママス＆パパスでさらに洗練されていった。つまりこのバンドで培われた音楽が、セバスチャン、ジョン・フィリップスという卓越したソングライターの才能を加えて、スプーンフル、ママス＆パパスで見事、開花したのである。選曲もコースターズ、フィエスタス等のカヴァー曲に交じって、ルーレッツの曲をはじめ英国産の3曲も含まれるなど、なかなかユニークである。』

キャス・エリオット(=ママ・キャス)は、ママス＆パパスではヴォーカルに徹していますが、マグワンプスでは2曲で作詞か作曲に参加しているようでこれが1964年というこの時期の初期ビートルズの様な作風でいい感じです。

②は、

『フォークからロックへ、アメリカ西海岸のミュージック・シーンが大きく変化する時期に登場した男性5人女性一人編成のグループ。66年にリバティから発売されたアルバムがシングル5曲を加えてリイシューされた。似た編成にウィ・ファイヴがあるが、このグループの方が積極的にフォークの枠から抜けだそうという意欲にあふれていた。ローリング・ストーンズの名曲に大胆にもハープシコードをからませた①やノイジーなギターが鳴り響く⑨などに、その試みがみられる。目指すところはアソシエーションやママス＆パパスと同じだったのだろうが、独創的なサウンドの確立にいたらなかったことがこのグループが消えていった原因か。ボブ・リンド作の③、メンバーのペンによる⑩など、自身のフォークルーツを素直にさらけだした曲にこそ、むしろ大きな魅力を感じる。ラリー・マレイのハーツ＆フラワーズのサウンドに通じる部分もある。70年初めにデュオで活躍するダン＆マッカシェンは、このグループの出身だ。』

尚、このグループは当初3名のフォーク・グループでスタートしましたが(画像9のように)エレキ編成のバンドとなります。解散後ベースのダン・ロッターメスターは、スティーブ・ヤングのストーンカントリーに参加します。もし68年位まで活動していたら女性ヴォーカルのいるザ・グラスルーツのようなバンドになれたかも知れませんね。⑰は、ママス＆パパスの「STRAIGHT SHOOTER」にソックリ！です。

In the mid-1960s, on the eve of the wave of flower movements and psychedelics, we are exhibiting two CDs of [Magwumps] and [Deep Six], who were active as American male and female chorus groups. It is not a rental omission. It is an audition of only 1-2 times for both boards.

“Magwumps formed in 1964. The main members Cass Elliot, Denny Dougherty, and Zar Janowski, who formed the Mamas & Papas and Lovin' Spoonful respectively after this group, announced their popularity in 1967. Tano is the main board (recorded in 1964). Their sound, which was a forerunner of the folk rock era, is based on blues, R&B, rock and roll, etc., and is undoubtedly continuing to be spoonful, and the harmonica of ② and ⑨ is, of course, John Sebastian. deaf. The occasional old pop sound was further refined by The Mamas & the Papas. Cass Elliot (= Mama Cass) devoted herself to vocals in The Mamas & The Papas, but seems to have participated in writing lyrics or composing two songs in Magwumps, which is a style like the early Beatles in this period of 1964. It feels good.

"From folk to rock, a group of 5 men and 1 woman who appeared at a time when the music scene on the west coast of the United States was undergoing a major change. The album released by Liberty in 1966 has been reissued with 5 singles. There is a similar organization, We Five, but this group was more motivated to break out of the folk framework. This is seen in ①, where the famous Rolling Stones song is boldly entwined with a harpsichord, and in ⑨, where a noisy guitar resounds. Their goal must have been the same as that of The Association and The Mamas & Papas, but perhaps the reason why this group disappeared was because they failed to establish an original sound. Songs such as 3) written by Bob Lind and 10) penned by the other members, which honestly reveal their folk roots, are rather attractive. There is also a part that leads to the sound of Larry Murray's Hearts & Flowers. Dunn & McCashen, a duo active in the early '70s, hail from this group. 』
